Here's the Inside Scoop on Christian Life Coaching

Christian life coaching is an approach to professional coaching which integrates a Biblical worldview.

More specifically, it is an ongoing conversation that empowers individuals to fully live out God’s calling on their life both at a personal as well as business level.

Christian coaching focuses on you.

Where you are, where you want to go, and how to get you there.

The goal of Christian life coaching is to first pause and listen to the Holy Spirit.

What is the Holy Spirit speaking for your life?

Along the way, you will discover more of who you truly are, along with who you are created to be.

From there, your coach will empower you to take action in order to reshape your life to better align with your core desires and dreams.

In short, Christian coaching takes you from where you are now to thriving right in the middle of your sweet spot.

What Life Coaching Is

Before we dive too deep into Christian coaching, let’s take a step back and look at what coaching really is.

  1. First, life coaching is about you, the individual. It’s about your goals, your dreams, your desires. It takes into consideration your learning, and how to optimize your growth.
  2. Second, life coaching is about learning. Unlike the typical classroom setting, your coach will not be teaching you. Instead, your coach will draw from an arsenal of tools designed to help you discover answers for yourself. You can expect your coach to give you the gift of active listening, open questions, timely encouragement, and positive support. In this way, your coach will enable you to discover the answers you need, and then take appropriate action steps.
  3. Next, life coaching is about action. There’s no space for idling when working with a coach. Instead, at the end of each coaching session, you will choose one to three action steps to complete before your next coaching session. You’ll be amazed at how quickly positive results start to happen.
  4. Lastly, life coaching is about all of you. That’s right. It’s not merely about your work life, or your private life, or something abstract or in between. Rather, coaching takes into consideration your whole person. It brings together your work life, your personal life, your church life, every part of you.

What Life Coaching Isn’t

  1. Life coaching isn’t therapy. Therapists focus on your past, versus coaches focus on your future. Coaching is about where you are today, and where you are or want to be going in the future.
  2. Life coaching isn’t mentoring. Mentors often take the form of advisors, teachers, or guides who are skilled in teaching you what to do. In contrast, coaches skillfully ask you questions so you discover yourself what to do, without anyone telling you.
  3. Life coaching isn’t training. When someone is training, they typically have a trainer who is both telling them what to do and setting the agenda. The opposite is true in coaching. Rather than having the agenda set for you, you are actually the one who sets the agenda for each session. You get to take control of your growth as your coach strategically motivates change.
  4. Life coaching isn’t authoritarian. Think of a tough sports coach who is always yelling at his players. This is the extreme opposite of coaching. Again, in coaching, you can expect your coach to be fully supportive of you while simultaneously pushing you to do things you never thought you were capable of.

Why Christian Life Coaching Works

Life coaching works because it’s about you and where you want to go. Your coach will provide timely support while guiding you in bringing out the very best of yourself. Together, you learn to listen to the Holy Spirit and discover what it means to follow His nudging. You answer pointed questions, and you discover how to truly grow and move forward. Within each session, you can expect your coach to do four things:

  1. Your story becomes paramount. As a result, your coach will ask questions and then listen fully as you discover the story that is unfolding in your life.
  2. Ask questions. Your coach will ask questions to stimulate your thinking and get you dreaming about the possibilities available to you in your future.
  3. Your coach is cheering you on! He’s for you, giving you just the right encouragement to help you press on.
  4. Facilitate while letting you lead. Your coach is never intended to lead you. Rather, he/she is here to facilitate optimum growth as you lead out and embrace forward momentum.

Why Christian Life Coaching?

The reasons for why coaching is so powerful are plenty.

They will vary from person to person, as each situation is unique.

Here are but a few ways that coaching can benefit you today:

  • You’ll make a significant change
  • You’ll make better decisions
  • You’ll set better goals
  • You’ll reach your goals faster
  • You’ll become more financially stable
  • You’ll discover a collaborative partner (your coach!)
  • You’ll become a better leader
  • You’ll simplify your life
  • You’ll address transitions in location and employment

These and more could be your new reality. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to experience any one of these, let alone the whole list?

How is Christian Life Coaching Unique?

While Christian life coaching is similar to other forms of coaching in a variety of ways, by engaging in Christian coaching, your coach will bring Christian beliefs and practices to the relationship.

You can share spiritual needs and ask spiritual-related questions.

Furthermore, if you are a believer, you have the Holy Spirit with you.

As a result, part of life coaching includes yourself and your coach together listening for the Holy Spirit’s direction in your life.

From there, Christian life coaching empowers you to take action as you propel into a brighter and better tomorrow.
